IMAGES FROM THE FIELD

While shooting a documentary on water and sanitation, we came across these two friends helping each other draw water from the school hand-pump. The one labouring the handle was short and had to jump to pump the handle. There were moments where she flew as she watched her friend drink. Then, they switched.

Halfway up a remote mountain, as night fell, we were forced to shelter at the home of this gentleman. The family put us all up - some 10 people - giving us their best rooms and food. Ever grateful.

Downstream from the Dhuandhar Falls, a fisherman seeks his quarry in the stream running 35 feet below.

The dramatic sheer cliffs and the turbulent Chambal river created an unforgettable setting for what ought to have been a sedate setting for a gentle sport.

A Ladakhi friend told us, 'Wherever you place the camera in Ladakh, you get stunning frames.'
Turns out, he was right: this was a perfectly regular day near the base of the Thiksey Gompa.

Fulche Tamang was at least 101 years old when we met him in a makeshift hospital outside Kathmandu. He'd survived the 2015 earthquake and did not like the attention being forced upon him by the media: all of whom were looking for a happy story in the midst of the gloom. Just behind Fulche, a doctor worked tirelessly on a patient who died while we were there.

In 2014, Narendra Modi and the right-wing BJP came to power after 10 years of a Congress-led alliance, the UPA. This image is from outside the BJP headquarters in Delhi, where a havan (a sacred Hindu religious ceremony) was being performed to celebrate the victory. These sweets would later be distributed as prasad.

Independent photographer Surender Solanki had been documenting the River Yamuna for years. He took us to see a nullah flowing with sewage and industrial effluents. Almost 50 feet across, it looked to be as deep. Downstream, children bathed and cattle sipped on the water: both blissfully unconcerned with the reality of the river they loved.

Children run through a new village established by Muslims forced to leave their homes after the riots around Muzaffarnagar. They had bought small plots at exorbitant prices from the village sarpanch (village head), spending the compensation money the government had given them.
